Assessing Students' Academic Language and Science Knowledge

(middle school)

Exit Ticket

Description of key features:

A

Each session includes an associated exit ticket for assessment.

B

The first part of the exit ticket is an academic language exercise. In many cases, as shown in this example, students match vocabulary words that appeared in the session with the correct definition.

C

Longer lists of vocabulary words are divided into two smaller sections to support students in completing the matching activity.

D

The second part of the exit ticket focuses on the key science concepts from the session: kinetic and potential energy and their relationship to position/movement.

E

Green boxes provide helpful contextual information or clarify academic language. The green box here defines the words “most” and “least” to help students understand and answer the questions in Part 2 of the Exit Ticket.

F

Strategically phrased starter phrases foster in-depth thinking and more elaborated responses related to the content.

The images below show an exit ticket from Session 3.2: Feel the Energy – The Science of Roller Coasters, the second session in the Kinetic and Potential Energy module. Students complete the exit ticket at the end of the session to show their understanding of key academic vocabulary and science concepts from the session. Numbered circles in the images highlight key features that are explained below.

Quiz

Description of key features:

A

Each module includes one or more quizzes for assessment. Quizzes consist of multiple parts that involve different ways for students to engage with the content and show their learning. For example: multiple choice questions, matching activities, diagram labeling, and short writing tasks.

B

The first part of the quiz shown above asks students to match examples with the type of energy described. An illustration accompanies each example to support students in understanding each example.

The image below shows part of a quiz from the Kinetic and Potential Energy module. This quiz assesses content and vocabulary from the first three sessions of the module, including identifying and describing kinetic and potential energy, different types of energy, and basic energy conversions. Numbered circles in the image highlight key features that are explained below.
